with increased radiation in the near UV especially suitable for use in photo-copying or for irradiating flowing liquids in chemical processes in which chemical reactions have to take place, e.g. the manufacture of caprolactam, which is a starting product in the manufacture of nylon.

In a high-pressure mercury vapour halogen discharge lamp having a discharge space which contains mercury, a rare gas, a halogen, lead and optionally gallium and/or indium, the discharge space contains from 0.004 to 0.12 mgs. of lead per cubic cm. and the quantity of halogen is chemically equivalent to at least the total lead plus gallium plus indium and to not more than twice that amount. The halogen is preferably iodine. The discharge may be wall stabilized with the quantity of mercury 0.1 to 5 mg./cm.3 of the discharge space, or electrode stabilized with 10 to 50 mg./cm.3 of mercury. The lead and part of the mercury may be introduced as halides. The indium and/or gallium may also be present as halides. The lead increases the radiation in the range 350-450 nm. and the lamp is suitable for use in photo-copying or for irradiating flowing liquids in chemical processes, e.g. nylon manufacture.
